One icon for each line that is switched on

Two signal icons mean two lines are registered. They do not mean both are spending data.

Two signal icons mean your phone has two lines switched on, and each has joined a network. One is usually your home SIM. The other is the travel eSIM. The icons do not tell you which line may use mobile data. That choice is the Mobile Data or Cellular Data setting, one level down in Settings.

The short answer

Two signal icons are normal with a home SIM and a travel eSIM both switched on. Read the names under the icons or in the SIM list. Only the line chosen for mobile data should carry your browsing.

Why This Matters

A second icon is how people find out the home SIM connected abroad. The icon is just information. Your bill depends on whether that line may use data, take calls, or simply register. Those are three different switches.

How to read the pair

An iPhone shows a pair of signal meters in the status bar, or in Control Centre, when two lines are on. The labels are the names you gave the plans, or the network names. Android shows a similar pair, sometimes with a small mark on the data line. Neither layout promises that the left icon is home. The name is what counts. Open the SIM list if the status bar is too small to read. A travel eSIM that is installed but switched off gets no icon. A line that is on and searching shows an empty meter or No Service. It still counts as switched on. No Service on the home icon is the battery drain case, which we cover on another page. It does not mean the line is safe from roaming fees.

Which icon may use data

Do not judge the bill by which bars look stronger

The stronger icon is the better radio signal, not the cheaper line. A strong home network icon abroad is a roaming connection with a good view of a tower.

Look at Settings, then Mobile Service or Cellular on iPhone, then Mobile Data. The ticked line is the data line. On Android the mobile data SIM is named in the SIM manager. Match that name to an icon. If the ticked name is the home network, your browsing is on the roaming line, however healthy the other bars look. Cellular data switching can move data off the ticked line when that line is weak. Two healthy icons do not prove the switch is off. Open the switch. iPhone calls it Allow Cellular Data Switching. Samsung calls it Auto data switch. Off keeps the ticked line as the only data line.

Two meters at baggage claim

Priya sees two signal meters and assumes the new one is the only one working. The second meter is her home network. It connected because she left the line on for bank texts. She opens SIM manager and sees the travel plan ticked for mobile data. She sees Auto data switch still on, and turns it off. Both icons stay, which is what she wanted for texts. Data stays on the travel plan.

Two icons, one data line

A Icon one Read its name
B Icon two Read its name
Each icon is a line that is switched on. Data follows the line you chose, not the fuller bars.

Final Thoughts

Name both lines, tick the travel plan for data, and keep the second icon only if you need that number.

Match the icons to the set-up

The setup guide is where you label the travel plan, so the status bar names mean something at the airport.
