What does Allow Cellular Data Switching do?

The switch that can spend your home SIM
Allow Cellular Data Switching lets a weak travel line use the other SIM for data.
Allow Cellular Data Switching is the iPhone name for a back-up on phones with two SIMs. Samsung and many other Android phones call the same control Auto data switch, Switch mobile data automatically, or Mobile data switching. It answers one question. If the line you chose for data goes weak, may the phone quietly use the other line instead? On a trip, that other line is usually your home SIM, and your home SIM is roaming.
The short answer
Turn Allow Cellular Data Switching off when a travel eSIM is your data line and the home SIM is still in the phone. On Android, turn off Auto data switch. Leave mobile data on for the travel eSIM.
Why This Matters
A home network can start a daily roaming pass from a small burst of data. That network bills the pass, not the travel eSIM. This switch is how a map tile or a photo backup can reach the home SIM, when you thought you had picked the travel line.
Where Allow Cellular Data Switching lives
On iPhone, open Settings, then Mobile Service or Cellular. Apple uses both names. Open Mobile Data or Cellular Data. Under the list of lines there is a switch called Allow Cellular Data Switching. It is not inside the travel plan’s own page. People miss it because the travel plan page has Data Roaming, and this switch sits one level up. On Samsung, open Settings, then Connections, then SIM manager. The control is often Auto data switch, under the SIM you picked for mobile data. Other Android phones put Switch mobile data automatically in the SIM or Network menu. If you cannot see the words, use the Settings search box and try switching, then data. Menu names differ by brand and Android version. What you want is a back-up from your chosen data SIM to the other SIM.
What the control changes, and what it leaves alone
With the switch on, the phone may send mobile data through the line you did not choose, when the chosen line has no signal or is too weak. It does not move your voice calls. Calls and texts stay on the line you set for them. It does not turn Data Roaming on or off. Each line has its own roaming switch, and those stay as you set them. With the switch off, a weak travel eSIM stays the only line allowed to carry mobile data. If it has no signal, data pauses. It does not hop to the home SIM. That pause is the point. A minute without maps costs less than a home-network day pass you did not mean to start. The control also does not stop the home SIM joining a foreign tower. Joining a network is separate from using data. Calls and texts can still reach the home number. Some networks charge a daily fee for that, even when this switch is off. If you do not need the home number on the trip, turn that line off. Do not rely on this one switch.
The four settings that belong together
- Choose the travel eSIM for mobile data On iPhone this is Mobile Data or Cellular Data. On Android it is the mobile data SIM. The tick should be on the travel plan, not the home network.
- Turn data roaming on for the travel eSIM A travel eSIM needs data roaming on, because the network it joins is not its home network. This is the opposite of the home SIM.
- Turn data roaming off for the home SIM That stops the home account being offered a data session. It does not block every call, text or voicemail fee on its own. Your network sets those rules.
- Turn the switching control off That is Allow Cellular Data Switching on iPhone, or Auto data switch or Switch mobile data automatically on Android. Off means the travel line cannot fall back on the other SIM.
| Setting | Travel eSIM | Home SIM |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile data line | Selected | Not selected |
| Data roaming | On | Off |
| Allow Cellular Data Switching or Auto data switch | Off for the phone | Off for the phone |
| Line itself | On when you want data | Off if you do not need the number |
Flight mode does not set this for you
Turning flight mode on and off, or powering the phone off on the plane, leaves Allow Cellular Data Switching where you last put it. If you land with it still on, a hotel basement can send traffic through the home SIM.
The hotel basement
Nia lands, joins airport Wi-Fi, and sets the travel eSIM as the data line. In the taxi the travel line has full bars. In the hotel basement it drops. Allow Cellular Data Switching is still on. So iMessage attachments and a photo upload leave through the home SIM. The home network texts her a daily pass before she reaches the room. The travel eSIM was installed. The back-up switch was the part she had not named.

Final Thoughts
Before you leave Wi-Fi, set the data line to the travel eSIM and turn Allow Cellular Data Switching (or Android Auto data switch) off.

Set the four switches before you fly
The roaming page walks through data roaming on for the travel line and off for the home line. Pair it with the setup guide if the travel plan is not installed yet.
