The icon with your home network’s name

Where an icon sits on the screen does not tell you which one is the home SIM.

Which signal icon is the home SIM? It is the one whose label is your home network, or the name you gave that line. It is not reliably the left icon, the right icon, or the one with more bars. Open the SIM list and read the names. On iPhone that list is in Settings, then Mobile Service or Cellular. On Android it is SIM manager or SIMs.

The short answer

Which signal icon is the home SIM? It is the line named for your usual network in the SIM list. The travel eSIM is the plan you installed for the trip. Bars do not identify either one.

Why This Matters

A wrong guess sends people to turn data roaming off on the travel plan and on for the home plan. That is the costly direction. The name is the check that stops the swap.

Read the label, then the tick

Tap into each line. The home line shows your usual network and your usual number, if that SIM has one. A data-only travel eSIM often has no phone number, or a placeholder. That is a clue, not a fault. The travel line’s name may be the plan name from the email, such as the country or region you bought. Once you know the names, look at which line is ticked for mobile data. You want the travel name ticked. You want data roaming on for that name and off for the home name. You want Allow Cellular Data Switching, or Android Auto data switch, off. Then the home name cannot pick up data when the travel name is weak.

If both labels are plain

A foreign network name can still be your home SIM

Roaming swaps the name on the status bar for the partner network. If you turn that icon off by guessing, you may switch off the travel plan and leave the home SIM as the only line.

Some phones call the lines Primary and Secondary, or Personal and Travel, from what was typed at install. If you skipped the name, rename them now, while you can still tell them apart by the network name underneath. Do it on Wi-Fi. Renaming does not move the plan and does not reinstall the profile. The home icon can show a foreign network name when it is roaming, because it is joined to a partner. The line name in Settings stays your home network even when the status bar shows the partner. Trust the Settings name when the status bar text has changed to a network you do not know.

Primary and Secondary

Jon’s status bar says Primary and a local network he does not know. In Settings, Primary is his home network, roaming on that local network. Secondary is the travel plan, which he had not ticked for data. He renames them Home and Trip. He ticks Trip for mobile data, turns data roaming off under Home, and turns Auto data switch off. The icons stay. Now the names say which bill each one belongs to.

Names, not position

A Status bar Partner name
B Settings Home network
The home SIM is the line whose Settings name is your usual network, even if the status bar shows a partner.

Final Thoughts

Rename the lines Home and Trip, then tick Trip for data before you leave airport Wi-Fi.

Check the phone can hold both lines

If the second line never appears, the phone may have no Add eSIM option. Compatibility is the check before another install try.
