Why does the battery die when the home SIM shows No Service?

A line that cannot connect keeps searching

No Service on the home SIM means the radio keeps hunting, and the hunt empties the battery.

The battery dies when the home SIM shows No Service. That line stays switched on, and its radio keeps hunting for a network it cannot find. A hunt uses more power than a line that has already joined a network. The travel eSIM can have full bars at the same time. The searching line is the drain, not the healthy one.

The short answer

Turn the home line off if you do not need it. No Service means it is switched on and failing to connect, which keeps the radio awake. Turning it off stops the search and leaves the travel eSIM as the working line.

Why This Matters

People add a travel eSIM and forget the home line is still on. Overnight on a bedside table, a No Service hunt can take the battery from full to empty before breakfast. The travel plan looks guilty because it is the new thing.

Why the hunt uses so much power

A line that has joined a network rests between short check-ins with the tower. A line with No Service never rests. It scans, tries nearby towers, and starts over. Dual-SIM phones do this for the unhappy line even while the other line is fine. Low Power Mode and battery saver slow some of this. They do not stop a line you left switched on. The direct fix is the line switch. Off ends the hunt. On, in a place where your home network’s partners have coverage, lets it join and then rest. Data roaming off does not stop the hunt. Roaming off blocks a data session. The search for a tower still goes on.

What to do on the day

  1. Check which line says No Service
Read the name. If it is the travel plan, that is a coverage or set-up fault, and the connection fixes apply. If it is the home network, this page is the right one.
  2. Turn that line off if you do not need the number
The travel eSIM keeps its own bars. Calls and texts to the home number stop arriving. That is the trade.
  3. Keep the data switches as they were
Travel plan chosen for data, data roaming on for it, cellular data switching off. The battery fix does not mean pointing data back at the home SIM.

Do not fix No Service by turning on home data

Pointing mobile data at the home SIM so it “has something to do” can start roaming charges. The battery problem is the search. Turn the line off, or let it connect without giving it data.

Flat by breakfast

Chris leaves the home line on overnight, because a client might text. The hotel room has no indoor signal for that network, so the icon says No Service for eight hours. The travel eSIM is on the hotel Wi-Fi and barely used. In the morning the phone is warm and down to a few percent. He turns the home line off and charges once. He turns the line on only when he is outside and waiting for the text.

Final Thoughts

If the home icon says No Service and you do not need that number today, turn the line off.

Tell a battery hunt from a broken install

Use the fixes when the travel plan is the line with no service. Use the line switch when the home SIM is the one searching.
