Can the phone fall back to the home SIM if the eSIM loses signal?

Only if you left the back-up on
A lost eSIM signal does not have to spend the home SIM.
Yes, the phone can fall back to the home SIM if the eSIM loses signal. But it only does so when cellular data switching is on. That control is Allow Cellular Data Switching on iPhone, and Auto data switch or Switch mobile data automatically on Android. With it off, a lost travel signal means data waits. It does not hand the session to the home line.
The short answer
A travel eSIM that drops signal can fall back to the home SIM for data only if the back-up switch is on. Turn that switch off, so a tunnel or a basement cannot start home-network roaming data.
Why This Matters
Signal loss is normal in lifts, metros and airport corridors. Those are the places where people spot a daily pass later, because the back-up did its job for thirty seconds of email.
What a lost signal does with the switch off
The travel eSIM stays the data line. Apps that need a connection spin until the eSIM finds a network again, or until you join Wi-Fi. The home SIM can still be registered for calls if you left that line on. Being registered is not the same as using data. Your network’s rules decide if registering alone has a fee. The data back-up is the part you can see and switch off in Settings. When the travel signal returns, data resumes on that line with no change to your settings. You do not need to toggle the back-up to “help it reconnect”. Reconnecting just needs data roaming on, the line switched on, and a few seconds of patience. That is the same list as the landing checklist.
What a lost signal does with the switch on
Do not answer “no data” by turning on the home SIM
Switching mobile data back to the home SIM in a dead spot is the back-up, done by hand. It spends the line you were trying to protect. Use Wi-Fi until the travel line returns.
The phone may place the data session on the other line. If that line is the home SIM and data roaming is on for it, the session is roaming data. If data roaming is off for the home SIM, the back-up may fail and you simply have no data. Or the phone may still try to connect in a way your network counts. Networks differ. The reliable cure has three parts. Switch the back-up off. Turn data roaming off on the home SIM. Turn the home line off if you do not need the number. A travel eSIM that loses signal for a long time is a coverage or set-up fault. It is not a reason to open the home SIM. Check you are in a country the plan lists, then try choosing a network by hand. The eight connection fixes cover that.
The metro between terminals
Leila’s travel eSIM drops for two stops. Her mail app keeps trying. She turned the back-up off at the gate, so the tries wait. The home SIM still shows a tower for calls, and she has already asked her network what that costs. The data never leaves the travel plan. At the next station the travel bars return and the same emails send.

Final Thoughts
Turn the back-up off before you land, so the first dead spot cannot spend the home SIM.

If the travel line never returns
A line that stays on No Service needs the connection checklist. The home SIM is not a stand-in data plan.
