How does DSDS work when one SIM is roaming?

Both lines can register. Only one should spend data
DSDS does not park a roaming SIM just because a travel eSIM is installed.
DSDS means Dual SIM Dual Standby. The phone keeps two lines registered, and it can take a call on either. But it does not give both lines a full data session at the same moment. When one SIM is roaming, DSDS still lets that SIM join a foreign tower unless you turn the line off. Standby does not mean free.
The short answer
With DSDS, a roaming home SIM can stay registered beside a travel eSIM. Pick the travel eSIM for data, turn data roaming off on the home SIM, and turn cellular data switching off. Then standby does not become a data bill.
Why This Matters
People read “standby” as “the home SIM is asleep”. The radio is still connected. Networks that charge for a registered line abroad will charge whether or not you open a browser.
What standby really allows
Both lines can listen for calls and texts. A call on one line can pause data on the other, because many phones have one radio path for a live call. That pause is a limit of DSDS. It is not a safety feature. It does not stop the home SIM staying on a roaming network between calls. Data is a separate choice. You pick one line as the mobile data line. The other line should not get data. The back-up switch should be off, so a weak moment does not override your choice. iPhone calls the back-up Allow Cellular Data Switching. Android names include Auto data switch and Switch mobile data automatically.
When one of the two lines is roaming
Standby can still be a roaming connection
Leaving the home SIM on because “it is only standby” is how a daily fee starts on a phone that never opened a map. Standby means registered.
Treat the roaming line as live. If it is your home SIM, your contract decides the cost of being registered, of calls, of texts, and of any data that escapes. The travel eSIM’s allowance does not cover those. Graba SIM bills the travel plan you bought. It does not sit between you and your home network’s roaming plan. Suppose you need the home number for bank texts. Leave the line on, with data roaming off and the back-up off. Ask that network what “registered abroad” costs before you fly. If you do not need the number, switch the line off. Off is the only setting that stops registration. Flight mode stops both lines, including the travel eSIM, so it is the wrong tool here.
Two bars, one bill
Hugo sees two signal icons and assumes the dimmer one is idle. It is his home network name, connected in the new country. He never picks it for data. His network still counts the connection, because DSDS registered the line. The travel eSIM did the browsing. The home account got the roaming fee. Turning that line off at the hotel removes the second icon.
DSDS keeps both lines listening
Final Thoughts
If you do not need the home number, turn that line off. Standby is still a registration.

Name the lines before you fly
Name each line as you install it, so the roaming one is easy to spot when both icons appear.
