If I use airplane mode to configure an eSIM, am I safe from roaming?

Airplane mode pauses the radios. It does not save your settings
You are safe only if the roaming switches are already in the right place.
Turning airplane mode on, setting up the eSIM, then turning airplane mode off does not make you safe from roaming. Airplane mode only pauses the radios while it is on. The moment it goes off, each line uses the data roaming, back-up and line switches you left in Settings. If those were wrong before the flight, they are wrong when you land.
The short answer
Airplane mode is a pause, not a set-up. Set the travel eSIM as the data line. Turn data roaming on for that line and off for the home SIM, and turn cellular data switching off. Then airplane mode can come off.
Why This Matters
The landing checklist uses a short airplane mode toggle to force a fresh network search. People copy that at home and think it locked the bill. It does not change any of the four switches.
What stays put while the radios are off
Data roaming, the chosen data line, Allow Cellular Data Switching and Android Auto data switch are saved settings. Airplane mode does not flip them. Powering off on the plane does not flip them either. When the phone wakes up, it applies the saved choices to whatever towers it can see. Setting up a new profile while airplane mode is on is fine. The install itself does not need a foreign tower. Some plans start their days at install, and some at first connection. The plan page says which. Airplane mode does not change that clock. Read the plan before you install. Do not hope the pause delayed the start.
The order that really protects the home SIM
- Install on Wi-Fi Add the travel profile from the email or your account page while you control the connection. Leave the new line off if you are not ready for it to connect.
- Set the four switches Travel line chosen for data. Data roaming on for that line and off for the home SIM. Cellular data switching or Auto data switch off.
- Then leave airplane mode Coming out of airplane mode with those switches set is the safe version. Coming out of it with the defaults is how the home SIM connects.
A ten-second toggle is a reconnect, not a lock
The connection fixes tell you to turn airplane mode on for about ten seconds when a line will not connect. Do that after the roaming switches are right. If you do it instead of setting them, the home SIM is free to register.
Set up at the gate
Sam turns airplane mode on at the gate and scans the QR. He turns airplane mode off as the plane pushes back. He never opened Mobile Data. On landing the travel line is installed but not chosen, and the home SIM connects first. The airplane gesture did the install. It did not pick a data line. In the taxi he uses airport Wi-Fi to put the four switches right before he leaves the building.
Airplane mode is a pause
Final Thoughts
Set the four switches on Wi-Fi, then take airplane mode off. The order is the protection.

Use the landing checklist after this
The first ten minutes are where a saved setting meets a real tower. Walk through them once before you leave airport Wi-Fi.
