A missed call can still be an event on the home SIM

Not answering is not the same as the line being off.

An unanswered incoming call can cost money abroad, depending on your home network. If the home SIM is on, the call can ring on a foreign network. Some plans count that ring, the divert to voicemail, or both. If the line is off, the call never reaches the phone. A travel eSIM does not take the call, because a data-only plan is not a voice line.

The short answer

An unanswered incoming call can still be billed. Ask whether a missed call or a voicemail divert counts while the SIM is roaming. Until you know, turn the home line off. Silence and Decline are not the same as off.

Why This Matters

The bill looks unfair because you did not speak. The network still did work on a roaming line. It found the phone, or it sent the call on to the mailbox that lives on your home account.

Three different ways of not answering

Line off: the phone is not registered. Callers get whatever your network does for an unreachable phone. That is often voicemail at home, and the phone never joins a foreign tower. Line on, call ignored: the phone was found abroad and you did not pick up. The divert to voicemail may then run. Line on, call declined: you sent a reject, which many networks treat as a cue to divert. These three do not all cost the same. No phone setting shows your network’s price for each state. The line switch is the only one that takes the phone off the foreign network. Do Not Disturb hides the ring but leaves the line registered. Flight mode switches off every line, including the travel eSIM. So it is a poor way to mute one number.

What to set before the flight

Decline is not off

Pressing Decline tells the network you are there. If your plan bills a divert or a connection, the decline can be the thing it bills. The line switch is the mute that takes you off the tower.

Ask the network about unanswered calls and about voicemail divert while roaming. If either starts a daily pass, turn the line off for the days you do not need it. Turn voicemail off too, or set it to work at home only, if their app allows that before you leave. Do this on Wi-Fi at home. Changing a divert with a dialled code once you are abroad can itself count as a roaming event. Keep the travel eSIM as the data line, so maps still work when the home line is off.

Three rings and a pass

Tom’s phone rings twice at dinner. He lets it go, and the caller leaves a voicemail that he never plays. His network counts the divert as use of the roaming line and starts the daily pass. The next day he turns the home line off, except when he is waiting for a particular call.

A missed call still reached the home SIM

  1. 1 Call arrives
  2. 2 Line on
  3. 3 Divert or ring
  4. 4 Line off skips this
Ignored and declined calls can hit a roaming line. Line off means the phone was not on that tower.

Final Thoughts

If missed calls are enough to start a pass on your plan, turn the home line off until you mean to be reachable.

Keep the travel line ready while the home line is off

The travel eSIM still needs to be the data line, with its own data roaming on. If not, maps stop when you silence the home number.
