Stop the divert before the tower

Voicemail lives on the home account. Turn it off at home on Wi-Fi.

You turn voicemail off in your home network’s app or account settings, while you are still on Wi-Fi before you fly. That stops unanswered calls being sent to a mailbox that your plan may bill while the home SIM is abroad. Do not rely on a dialled code from a forum once you have landed. A code dialled abroad can itself be billed as a roaming call, and the right code differs by network.

The short answer

Turn voicemail off in the network app on home Wi-Fi before you leave. If you cannot find the switch, ask support what their app calls it. Voicemail is not part of your travel plan.

Why This Matters

On plans that count voicemail as use of the roaming line, a divert can start a daily pass even if you never play the message. Turning voicemail off removes one route to that charge.

Why the app beats a mystery code

Networks hide voicemail controls under different names: call forwarding, divert when busy, divert when unanswered, or visual voicemail. The app usually lists the switches in plain words and applies them to the account. A mistaken code abroad can trigger its own fee. If the app only offers “forward to another number”, set that with care, or turn off all forwards. Some people turn the home line off completely when they do not need calls. That is stronger than voicemail off alone, because the phone never joins a foreign tower.

What a travel eSIM does not change

Callers still dial your home number. The mailbox stays on the home network. Installing a travel eSIM does not move voicemail or cancel diverts you left active. Keep cellular data switching off, so a later visual voicemail download cannot fall back to the home SIM. When you get back, turn voicemail on again the same way. Do it at home if their terms treat a change abroad as a roaming event.

Silent mode is not voicemail off

Do Not Disturb hides the ring. The call can still divert if voicemail is on and the line is registered abroad. Only the network’s voicemail setting, or the line switch, stops the divert.

The code at the gate

Priya tries a star code from a blog at the departure gate. The network logs a roaming service request before boarding. A marketing call still diverts, because the code was wrong for her account. Next trip she uses the network app at home, and gets the divert-off confirmation in writing.

Final Thoughts

Turn voicemail off in the home network’s app on Wi-Fi. Check that diverts are off before you register abroad.
