Does receiving an SMS trigger a daily roaming charge?

Incoming texts are a question for your network
Some plans ignore an incoming text. Some count any activity on the line.
Receiving an SMS might trigger a daily roaming charge, and it might not. An SMS is a normal text message. It arrives through your home SIM’s network, so your home network’s plan decides. A travel eSIM does not deliver that text and does not set the fee. Ask your network whether an incoming text is free, billed per message, or enough to start a daily pass.
The short answer
Receiving an SMS is not automatically free, and it is not automatically a day pass. Ask your home network. If any use of the line starts a pass, turn the line off until you mean to receive texts.
Why This Matters
Texts feel harmless because you did not press send. The network still delivered them to a SIM that is abroad. Some plans count that delivery.
What the phone can and cannot show
The phone cannot tag an incoming text with “this one started your pass”. You will see the message. Later you may get a text from the network, or a line on the bill. Match the time to when the home line was on. If the line was off, an incoming text usually waits, or it fails, depending on the network. It does not arrive through the travel eSIM. That plan is data-only and has no phone number for texts. iMessage and WhatsApp are a different matter. Those use data. A green text bubble, or a message that arrived when data was off, is the network’s text. If you want network texts to stop, the home line is the switch. The travel plan is not.
A practical way to decide
A travel eSIM will not catch your bank texts
If you turn the home line off to avoid a pass, one-time codes by text stop arriving. Set up another way to log in while the number still works at home.
On Wi-Fi, open your home network’s roaming page or app and search for incoming text. If you cannot find a clear answer, ask them in the app before you leave. Keep a screenshot. Then choose. Either leave the line on and accept their rule. Or turn the line off, and use data apps plus an authenticator for codes. Cellular data switching does not control texts. An incoming text can arrive while data is pinned to the travel eSIM. Stopping the data back-up does not stop the message. Only the line switch, or a bar that the network applies, does that.
The code at the hotel desk
Malik leaves his home line on for a bank code. He gets three other texts on the way from the airport. He checked his network’s rule the week before. An incoming text does not start the daily pass on his plan, but any data on that SIM does. He keeps data roaming off on the home line. The texts arrive. The pass does not, because his plan ignores them. A friend’s plan is the other kind. Malik does not tell the friend that texts are safe.
An incoming text stays on the home SIM

- 3 Their rule
- 4 Not the travel plan
Final Thoughts
Ask your network about incoming texts. Leave the home line on only if you accept the answer.

Keep data off the home line either way
Even on a plan where texts are free, data roaming on the home SIM is another way to start a pass.
