How to set up a travel eSIM on iPhone and Android before you fly

Set up your travel eSIM

Install on Wi-Fi at home, switch it on when you land

Installing a travel eSIM takes a couple of minutes, and doing it at home on Wi-Fi saves stress at the airport. Here are the steps for iPhone, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy, and the two settings to change when you arrive.

Before you start

  • Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked; check with our compatibility checker
  • You need a Wi-Fi connection to download the eSIM
  • Keep the QR code email handy, but don't delete the eSIM once installed, as most can't be reinstalled

iPhone

1. Open Configuración and tap Mobile Service (or Cellular). 2. Tap Añadir eSIM, then Use QR Code, and scan the code from your email.

3. Give the plan a label such as "Travel" so it's easy to recognise.

When asked, keep your normal line as the default for calls and texts.

Google Pixel

1. Open Configuración, then Network & internet, then SIMs. 2. Tap Add SIM (or Download a SIM instead?) and scan the QR code.

Follow the prompts to finish downloading.

Samsung Galaxy

1. Open Configuración, then Connections, then SIM manager. 2. Tap Añadir eSIM, then Scan QR code from service provider.

Scan the code and confirm.
Menus vary slightly between Android brands and versions. Look for "SIM", "eSIM" or "Mobile network" in Settings.

Why This Matters

Most eSIMs can only be installed once. Don't delete it after your trip until you're sure you won't top it up.

Choose the eSIM for mobile data. On iPhone: Settings, Mobile Service, Mobile Data. On Android: Settings, Network & internet (or Connections), SIMs, then set the eSIM for mobile data.

Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line. Travel eSIMs connect to partner networks abroad, so roaming must be on for that line. Leave roaming off on your home SIM to avoid charges.
Your normal SIM can stay on for calls and texts, so you remain reachable on your usual number.
